14 November 2013 - WINDSOR BRIDGE - NSW GOVERNMENT ORDERED TO PRODUCE PAPERS

Today the NSW government has been instructed by Parliament to hand over documents relating to the planned Windsor Bridge Replacement Project.

The local community and historians alike have overwhelmingly rejected the Windsor Bridge Replacement Project due to its impacts on the oldest town square in Australia and lack of traffic benefit.

Today the Department of Planning, the Minister for Planning and the Premier have been told to deliver papers and communications about the Project to the Legislative Chamber.

The Order for the papers was the result of motion by Greens MP and Heritage Spokesperson David Shoebridge.

Mr Shoebridge says “It is hoped that the documents produced in response to this order will shed some light on how and why the Government has been pushing a project that will do so much damage to Australia’s oldest public square.

CAWB Chairman, Mr Dail Miller expressed his thanks to Mr Shoebridge for his actions, noting his own concern to understand why a project that fails to deliver measurable benefits has been pursued so aggressively. He says “If this project were to proceed it would irrevocably damage a prime Macquarie precinct. We want to know why that price has to be paid to deliver such substandard road infrastructure.”

Community Action for Windsor Bridge has been occupying Thompson Square around the clock since 21 July this year and Mr Miller paid tribute to the community for their support and determination in achieving this remarkable feat. He notes, “The Occupiers are tough people. It has been freezing cold. It has been unbelievably hot. We’ve had bush fires in the district. Some of the team have been fighting fires and doing shifts at the tent, while some people have covered shifts for firefighters. The entire Occupation is a fantastic team effort.”

Shadow Heritage minister Barbara Perry says “The appalling impact of the Windsor Bridge Project on one of Australia’s most important and precious heritage precincts needs to be stopped; not just because of the damage to this important Macquarie legacy but because of the extremely concerning lack of due process around this project.” Mrs Perry went on to say she was both grateful and humbled by the amazing work being done by CAWB. She guaranteed her continued support in the battle to save Thompson Square.
