Proudly displayed on a wall in Windsor is a painting from the WW2 era of the wharf, bridge and east bank of Thompson Square done by a female amateur artist when a young woman sharing her father’s equal love of painting and the little patch of land they both call home. She wishes to remain anonymous.
The delicate watercolour captures the bucolic essence of that sunny day when the area was more contemplative and inviting. It really seems Macquarie’s aim of creating an area for all to enjoy forever was still true. We can appreciate the river traffic and period wharf, indeed the whole place seems to be in balance aesthetically and historically.
The old wharf has been eliminated and a floating plastic and concrete one replaced it, but subsequently sunk.
The new bridge will ride directly over where the old wharf and boat are pictured defacing the whole area – it will just look like everywhere else.
The painter is very old now and laments the pending desecration of this recollection of her youth. Don’t we all!
It will be all our loss if remembrances of this place is only held in such images. How can our leaders be so spiritually vacuous and culturally insensitive?
