Hawkesbury Gazette - 29 October 2014
On Saturday, 18th October, the Liberal candidate visited the CAWB tent in Thompson Square. This a strong indication of the importance of this issue at the next State election. We hope it also signals a significant shift in the Government’s attitude towards the infrastructure requirements of the Hawkesbury, particularly given the candidate indicated that funding could be found to build a bypass for Windsor. It is disappointing the Hawkesbury has to wait for a State Election to get essential infrastructure on the Government’s agenda. It is not clear whether funding for a bypass would be in addition to the $65 million the Government plans to waste building a two-lane bridge (one lane in each direction) that will permanently leave the oldest public square in Australia on the inter-urban freight haulage route. If so, we suggest a much simpler and less expensive solution: scrap the current destructive plan and direct all funding to a proper 21st century, four lane bypass and renovate historic Windsor Bridge for local access. We would then have six lanes crossing the river at Windsor. We call upon the Premier to immediately confirm his candidate’s comments and announce full funding for commencement of work to deliver a new bridge across the Hawkesbury River on a flood free bypass, and the renovation of the current, functional Windsor Bridge. We also remind the Premier that the river crossing at North Richmond is a site of greater congestion and must be part of an urgent strategic transport plan for this rapidly developing Region.
